Speak the name of Bill Gates or Donald Trump and men think of massive wealth and business acumen. Speak about McCain or Obama and men think of political ambition. Mention Tiger Woods or Michael Phelps and thoughts turn to athletic talent and determination.

Speak the name of God. What comes to mind?

  • David considers God’s reputation to be excellent (verses 1 and 9).
  • God has chosen men to represent Him before His enemies (v 2). Compare Matthew 21:16, Luke 10:21 and 1 Corinthians 1:27.
  • In our eyes, we are nothing when standing next to (beneath?) the expanse of heaven (v 3).
  • One wonders why our great and mighty God would spend any time thinking about men, much less actually doing good to men (v 4).
  • Yet God has appointed men to be stewards of God’s creation (v 6-7, Genesis 1:28).

Meditation Points:

  1. Job asked the same question, “What is man?” (Job 7:17)
  2. God’s infallible interpretation is found in Hebrews 2:6-9, where we see that these words of David were prophetic, speaking of Jesus Christ the coming Messiah.

  • Has God done anything like this for you? Psalm 81:6-7.
  • How many times must God remind us not to worship false god? Psalm 81:9.
  • God doesn’t “give up” on you; He “gives you up” to your own sinful desires. Psalm 81:12, Romans 1:24,28.

 

Psalm 82

  • Can the Just One approve those who are unjust? Of course not. Psalm 82:2-4.
  • Psalm 82:6; John 10:33-36. Jesus is God. Government officials reflect that authority in their positions. Romans 13:1-4.
  • Even the most powerful, richest, wealthiest, athletic, educated will die like men. Psalm 82:7.

 

Psalm 83

  • The psalmist recognizes the conspiracy of nations to destroy the people of God (v 1-8).
  • He pleads with God to intervene (v 9-17).
  • Why? That men may know God (Psalm 83:18).

War often sets men praying. In the midst of the great conflict between good and evil, right and wrong, we should join Asaph.

  • in shock that the heathen defile the holy things of God (v 1)
  • in sorrow that many of God’s servants have been slain by the enemy (v 2-3)
  • in shame that we have become a reproach to our neighbors (v 4)
  • in desire that God would avenge Himself (v 5-7)
  • in prayer that God would save us (v 8-9)
  • in compassion for those who have been enslaved by the enemy (v 11)
  • in thankfulness and praise to our Sovereign Lord (v 13)

 

Psalm 80

Three times we read this prayer:

  • Turn us again, O God, and cause thy face to shine; and we shall be saved. (v 3)
  • Turn us again, O God of hosts, and cause thy face to shine; and we shall be saved. (v 7)
  • Turn us again, O LORD God of hosts, and cause thy face to shine; and we shall be saved. (v 19)

The vine (v 8-16)

  • brought out of Egypt
  • planted in Canaan
  • deep-rooted and fruitful
  • broken down and overrun
  • burned and perishing

Is it any wonder that the psalmist prayed for revival? Do you?

Telling our children, the next generation, about God (v 1-8 )

  • The account may be difficult to understand (v 2)
  • We speak about our personal walk with God and about the testimonies we have heard from others (v 3)
  • Our children will hear everything; we will keep nothing back (v 4)
  • Previous generations were commanded to tell their children, too (v 5)
  • Knowing the history of God and His people should lead us to faith in Him (v 6)
  • Mistakes of the past should be lessons for the future (v 7)
  • Do not be stubborn and rebellious; set your heart aright and be steadfast with God (v 8 )

Sins of our ancestors and God’s mercy (v 9-72)

Who would believe…

  • They kept not the covenant of God (v 10)
  • They refused to walk in His law
  • They forgot God’s works and wonders (v 11)
  • They sinned, and provoked God (v 17)
  • They tempted God (v 18)
  • They spoke against God (v 19)
  • They questioned whether God was fully able to supply their needs under adverse circumstances (v 19)
  • They acknowledged God’s provision of water, but doubted His ability to present bead and meat (v 20)
  • They did not believe God (v 20)
  • They did not trust in God’s salvation
  • They ate angels’ food, yet sinned more and believed not in God (v 25, 32)
  • They flattered God with their mouth, but they lied to him with their tongues (v 36)
  • Their heart was not right (v 37)
  • They were not steadfast in God’s covenant
  • They often provoked Him in the wilderness, and grieved Him in the desert (v 40)
  • They did not remember God’s hand at work on their behalf (v 42)
  • They tempted and provoked God; they did not keep His testimonies (v 56)
  • They turned back and dealt unfaithfully, like their fathers (v 57)
  • They provoked God to anger (v 58)
  • They moved Him to jealousy
  • And in the end, they died (63-64).
  • But they did not defeat the purposes of God Who chose others with whom to build His kingdom (v 65-72)

4Of Heman: the sons of Heman: Bukkiah, Mattaniah, Uzziel, Shebuel, and Jerimoth, Hananiah, Hanani, Eliathah, Giddalti, and Romamtiezer, Joshbekashah, Mallothi, Hothir, and Mahazioth:
5All these were the sons of Heman the king's seer in the words of God, to lift up the horn. And God gave to Heman fourteen sons and three daughters.
6All these were under the hands of their father for song in the house of the LORD, with cymbals, psalteries, and harps, for the service of the house of God, according to the king's order to Asaph, Jeduthun, and Heman.
1 Chronicles 15:14-19
14So the priests and the Levites sanctified themselves to bring up the ark of the LORD God of Israel.
15And the children of the Levites bare the ark of God upon their shoulders with the staves thereon, as Moses commanded according to the word of the LORD.
16And David spake to the chief of the Levites to appoint their brethren to be the singers with instruments of musick, psalteries and harps and cymbals, sounding, by lifting up the voice with joy.

14For the unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified by the husband: else were your children unclean; but now are they holy.
15But if the unbelieving depart, let him depart. A brother or a sister is not under bondage in such cases: but God hath called us to peace.
16For what knowest thou, O wife, whether thou shalt save thy husband? or how knowest thou, O man, whether thou shalt save thy wife?
Ephesians 5:22-32
22Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.
23For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.
24Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing.
25Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;
26That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,
27That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.
28So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself.
29For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church:
30For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones.

32This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.
