God’s Excellent Name

Speak the name of Bill Gates or Donald Trump and men think of massive wealth and business acumen. Speak about McCain or Obama and men think of political ambition. Mention Tiger Woods or Michael Phelps and thoughts turn to athletic talent and determination.

Speak the name of God. What comes to mind?

  • David considers God’s reputation to be excellent (verses 1 and 9).
  • God has chosen men to represent Him before His enemies (v 2). Compare Matthew 21:16, Luke 10:21 and 1 Corinthians 1:27.
  • In our eyes, we are nothing when standing next to (beneath?) the expanse of heaven (v 3).
  • One wonders why our great and mighty God would spend any time thinking about men, much less actually doing good to men (v 4).
  • Yet God has appointed men to be stewards of God’s creation (v 6-7, Genesis 1:28).

Meditation Points:

  1. Job asked the same question, “What is man?” (Job 7:17)
  2. God’s infallible interpretation is found in Hebrews 2:6-9, where we see that these words of David were prophetic, speaking of Jesus Christ the coming Messiah.

Matthew 21:16
16And said unto him, Hearest thou what these say? And Jesus saith unto them, Yea; have ye never read, Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings thou hast perfected praise?
Luke 10:21
21In that hour Jesus rejoiced in spirit, and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes: even so, Father; for so it seemed good in thy sight.
1 Corinthians 1:27
27But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty;
Genesis 1:28
28And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.
Job 7:17
17What is man, that thou shouldest magnify him? and that thou shouldest set thine heart upon him?
Hebrews 2:6-9
6But one in a certain place testified, saying, What is man, that thou art mindful of him? or the son of man, that thou visitest him?
7Thou madest him a little lower than the angels; thou crownedst him with glory and honour, and didst set him over the works of thy hands:
8Thou hast put all things in subjection under his feet. For in that he put all in subjection under him, he left nothing that is not put under him. But now we see not yet all things put under him.
9But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.

God’s covenant with David

1 Samuel 7

1 Chronicles 17

1-2 David desires to build a house for God 1
3 Nathan agrees 2
4 God speaks to Nathan 3
5 God asks, “Shall you?” 4 God says, “No.”
6 God never had a house before 5
7 God never asked for a house 6
8 God chose David 7
9 God walked with David 8
10 God will decide where His people will live 9
11 God will build a house for David 10 God will make a house for David
12 God will establish the kingdom of David’s seed, after the death of David 11
13 David’s seed will build a house for God; and his kingdom shall be forever 12
14 God will be his father; and he God’s son 13
If he commits sin, God will chasten him. ***** (no parallel)
15 God’s mercy will never depart from him as it did from Saul 13
16 David’s house and kingdom and throne shall be established forever 14 God will settle the seed of David in God’s house and kingdom forever; and the throne of David’s seed shall be forever
17 Nathan delivered the message to David 15
18 David asks, “Who am I? What is my house?” 16
19 God’s word applies to the distant future 17
20 What else can I say? Lord, You know. 18
21 God’s own will has ordered this 19
22 There is no other like the LORD God 20
23 There is no other people like God’s people 21
24 God has chosen His people 22
25 O Lord, may Your word ever be true 23
26 May your name be exalted forever 24
27 Your revelation causes me to pray 25
28 Your word is true 26
29 Your blessing will make these things so 27

Can you see that One, greater than Solomon (Matthew 12:42), is the object of this promised blessing; and that His kingdom alone shall be forever (Isaiah 9:6-7)?

6For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
